The Network Address Translation allows you to share a single IP address and protects you from outside intruders gaining access to your private network.Simple and Cheap.I did update the device with firmware that I downloaded from the D-Link Web site. The firmware update process was easy and hitch-free.So I ordered another for the features this tiny unit offers. Very configurable with features found in much higher priced routers. Inclusion of block ping from WAN side for a cheap router is nice. This method resolved most of my issues. Possibly the later firmware in the newer models resolved this. The router arrived when they said it would arrive, so that's a very big plus.Upon plugging it in, my machines received Ip Addresses and were online. No problems passing a VPN connection through the router. Also, its easy to set up port forwarding for inbound calls for video conferencing (Polycom) as long as it is to a single static IP address on your network. Easy to navigate web interface for the router.I power cycled the router using the surge protector switch but that didn't fix it. Unplugging the power cord at the back of the Dlink router didn't work either.Just be sure you are downloading the right firmware version based on the build information found on a sticker underneath the router. Or a firewall can be configured to work with specific UDP or TCP ports to allow certain applications or games to work properly over the Internet. LAN’s can be connected over large areas. A collection of LAN’s connected over a large area is called a Wide Area Network (WAN). There are many types of media that can connect computers together. The most common media is CAT5 cable (UTP or STP twisted pair wire.) On the other hand, wireless networks do not use wires; instead they communicate over radio waves. Each computer must have a Network Interface Card (NIC), which communicates the data between computers. A NIC is usually A hub simply takes any data arriving through each port and forwards the data to all other ports. A switch is more sophisticated, in that a switch can determine the destination port for a specific piece of data. A switch minimizes network traffic overhead and speeds up the communication over a network. There are many ways to configure your network. You may want to take some time to determine the best network set-up for your needs. If any of the above items are missing, please contact your reseller. All ports auto-sense cable types to accommodate Straight-through or Cross-over cable. No special wiring or cooling requirements are needed. However, you should comply with the following guidelines: Keep away from any heating devices. The default IP address of the DI-604 is The default gateway must be 192.168.0.1 (the IP address of the DI-604). You can configure your DI-604 through the Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer browser in MS Windows, Macintosh, Linux or UNIX based platforms. All that is needed is a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator version 4 and higher with Java Script enabled. Click the OK button. Please select the appropriate option that is used by your ISP. Please see Static IP Address section. Please see PPPoE section. The CLONE MAC Address button is used to copy the MAC address of your Ethernet adapter to the DI-604 WAN interface. You will need to enter in WAN IP Address, WAN Subnet Mask, WAN Gateway, and Primary DNS. Click Restart to save the settings and reboot the DI-604. You should be able to access the Internet. The Setup Wizard is a utility used to quickly configure the DI-604. It will guide you through four quick and basic steps to help you connect to your ISP. You will be connected to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and have Internet access within minutes. The WAN settings can be referred to as the Public settings. All IP information in the WAN settings are public IP addresses which are accessible on the Internet. Select the appropriate option and fill in the information needed to connect to your ISP. Select this option if your ISP does not give you any IP numbers to use. This option is commonly used for Cable modem services. The host name is the device name of the Broadband Router. It is not recommended that you change the default MAC address unless required by your ISP. You will need to enter in the IP address, subnet mask, gateway address, and DNS address(es) provided to you by your ISP. Each IP address entered in the fields must be in the appropriate IP form, which are four IP octets separated by a dot (x.x.x.x). The Router will not accept the IP address if it is not in this format. Subnet Mask: Subnet mask provided by your ISP. Your ISP will provide you with a username and password. This option is typically used for DSL services. Select Dynamic PPPoE to obtain an IP address automatically for your PPPoE connection. Select Static PPPoE to use a static IP address for your PPPoE connection. Enter in the static IP address for the PPPoE connection.

That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots. Your router has a web interface, so you will login to it using your web browser. This can be either Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Edge. It usually does not matter which browser you choose to use. It should look something like this: Your router's IP address can also be refered to as your computer's default gateway. If all goes well you will see the following screen: Here's how you do it. Starting from the first page in your router: In this new menu, click Virtual Server. The name does not matter so pick something that has meaning to you. It's possible for this to be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address on your network that you want ports forwarded to. They are there so you can direct traffic at two devices on your network. Let's call these devices device one(192.168.0.1) and device two(192.168.0.1). Okay we setup your router to forward port 21 to device one(192.168.0.1:21). How do we get to the second device. Well the Private Port and Public Port entries allow us to specify another outside port to connect to our internal port 21. Lets make the additional port, port 30. We would now setup a rule in the router with the Public Port set to 30 and the Private port set to 21. The IP address in that rule would be 192.168.0.1. So when you wanted to ftp to device two you would specify port 30 in your ftp client. It is time to test them. Our Open Port Check tool is the only online port checking tool with Guaranteed Results. The D-Link DI-604 enables users to quickly and easily share a high speed Internet connection. The D-Link DI-604 also incorporates many advanced features, traditionally found in more expensive routers.

This Manual is designed to help you connect the D-Link Express EtherNetwork DI-604 to a high speed Internet connection and 4 Ethernet PC connections. Please take a moment to read through this manual and get acquainted these various technologies. The DI-604 can sense the application type and open a multi-port tunnel for it. This function is used when the Special Application feature is insufficient to allow an application to function correctly. Routers forward data packets using IP addresses and not a MAC address. A router will forward data from the Internet to a particular computer on your LAN. When you click on a link on a web page, you send a request to a The information that is sent and received from your computer is moved from your computer to the server using routers. A router also determines the best route that your information should follow to ensure that the information is delivered properly. This provides security for the computers connected to your router, because computers from the outside cannot access or send information directly to any computer on your network. The router determines which computer the information should be forwarded to and sends it. If the information is not intended for any computer on your network, the data is discarded. This keeps any unwanted or harmful information from accessing or damaging your network. A firewall can be a computer using firewall software or a special piece of hardware built specifically to act as a firewall. In most circumstances, a firewall is used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks or corporate LAN’s and Intranets. Each piece of data is checked against a set of criteria that the administrator configures. If any data does not meet the criteria, that data is blocked and discarded. If the data meets the criteria, the data is passed through. This method is called packet filtering. For example, a firewall can be configured to work with an FTP or Telnet server.

Enter a Maximum Idle Time (in minutes) to define a maximum period of time for which the Internet connection is maintained during inactivity. If the connection is inactive for longer than the defined Maximum Idle Time, then the connection will be dropped. Either set this to zero or enable Auto-reconnect to disable this feature. For PPPoE connections, you may need to change the MTU settings in order to work correctly with your ISP. This is considered your internal network. These are the IP settings of the LAN interface for the DI-604. These settings may be referred to as Private settings. You may change the LAN IP address if needed. The LAN IP address is private to your internal network and cannot be seen on the Internet. The default IP address is 192.168.0.1. The default subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. Enter in the your local domain name. The DI-604 has a built-in DHCP server. The DHCP Server will automatically allocate an unused IP address from the IP address pool to the requesting computer. You must specify the starting and ending address of the IP address pool. If you wish, you can make some of the LAN computers accessible from the Internet by enabling Virtual Server. Depending on the requested service, the DI-604 redirects the external service request to the appropriate server within the LAN network. There are already pre-defined virtual services already in the table. You may use them by enabling them and assigning the server IP to use that particular virtual service. The schedule may be set to Always, which will allow the particular service to always be enabled. If it is set to Time, select the time frame for the service to be enabled. If the system time is outside of the scheduled time, the service will we disabled. Web (HTTP) server is on LAN computer 192.168.0.25. HTTP uses port 80, TCP. This is an example of port redirection and can be useful in cases where there are many of the same servers on the LAN network. These applications have difficulties working through NAT (Network Address Translation). Special Applications makes some of these applications work with the DI-604. The DI-604 provides some predefined applications in the table on the bottom of the web page. Select the application you want to use and enable it. It can be either a single port or a range of ports. You may define a single port or a range of ports. You can use a comma to add multiple ports or a hyphen to add port ranges. The DI-604 can be setup to deny internal computers by their IP or MAC addresses. The DI-604 can also block users from accessing restricted web sites. 0 out of 5 stars The router provides fast networking between the two machines, I have transferred a 600 MB file in under 2 minutes on our local network. I had a small problem with the install that was fixed by installing the newest firmware. Follow this advice in the instructions and do this step first. I get both fast upload and downloads without any problems. I like the light weight aspect because the router is hanging in mid-air between the printer and monitor. The mid-air positioning may be preventing some of the other errors that have been reported due to overheating. I have been using the router since mid-Decemember and have not experienced overheating or slow downs in data transfer. I had one problem when the setup software in the internet explorer would display the main screen but no links. I fixed this problem without resetting the router, but unplugging it from its power supply. PeteIts excellent instruction manual walked us through the installation process in minutes, with appropriate lighted indicators on the router itself letting us know where we stood each step of the way. Our home network is now up to three PCs, all of which work well through the DLink device. We would highly recommend this router for its effectiveness, simplicity, and value !Eventually, I liked it so much that I bought another one at my local electronics store. This product totally exceeded my original expectations. I thought it was just a vanilla router - it was certainly cheaper than a lot of others. However, this baby is VERY configurable. It's also a must if you're running an internet or ftp server. It allows you to have some computers be accessible to the outside while keeping your other computers safe with its firewall software. This is also great for online gaming as router firewalls can sometimes be a problem. As a bonus, this baby has the software for connecting XBoxes if you want to have an Xbox lan party or use the XBox Live Software.

I haven't used this aspect of it, but it does mention that it's compatible. It provides excellent protection from Internet malware and hackers, since it has Network Address Translation (NAT) and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI). The problem is that the latest one that I bought tends to need rebooting (totally cold start - power off) to get it to connect to my computers. Other than that, I have no problems with it, but that one problem causes me to lower the rating to two-stars. If not for that, I'd give it five stars. It's too bad that D-Link discontinued this model rather than just fixing the reboot problem.I have had several of their products in the past, and never had problems with them. But this router is junk. Nothing works right, and the web menu stops operating (and on-and-on). I had faith, so I kept trying to make things happen. But, after a very frustrating month, I gave up and got a TP-Link router (TL-R860) which worked perfectly right away, and was les expensive.I have cable service and those guys were charging me a large premium every month for my extra computers. This little box took care of that problem. The setup was amazingly simple. I think it took all of 1 minute to setup and I had all 3 of my computers browsing the internet. It will even clone your mac address so you provider can't tell its not your main computer. I love the web page interface used in setup as well. After I had it a little while, I went to the dlink webpage and found updated firmware. This had one confusing step (the fact that you don't extract the bin file, you must leave it as that despite what they say), but after i figured that out it went smoothly. It was nice that the router protected me from loading the wrongly encoded file (this would have really messed up the unit). It wouldn't let any intruders initiate contact with my system. Neato! My only complaint is that while this Router works very well, the things go south whenever lightening strikes two States away.

One would think that if they can make a Cable Modem that is not effected by lightening spikes they could have made this Router just as resistant. This is the third replacement, and since they are being used up, probably the last.It arrived in only 3 days. The router was very easy to install using its web GUI and setup wizard. It also includes a firewall and now I can block ping requests coming in from the WAN interface whereas my Westell DSL modem couldn't do that. The Linksys EtherFast PCMCIA ethernet card on my KNOPPIX linux laptop couldn't talk to my 4-port Linksys switch (might be due to an auto-sensing problem) but it works perfectly with this router. This router has plenty of features for a very reasonable price. How can I update my security settings? Note: You might want to print these directions to make the troubleshooting process easier. Go to Step 2. Ensure the router is plugged in to wall outlet Go to Step 3. Go to Step 4. Go to Step 5. Re-check your router lights. Reconnect the other computers one-by-one to isolate the problem. If the WAN light is not lit solid green: The D-Link router has a range of up to 300 feet, but this is affected by the number and density of walls that the RF signal passes through. If the signal hits a wall at an angle, the signal appears much larger and its strength is decreased. Placing it higher in the room and away from your monitor may also help. Note: You might want to print these directions to make the troubleshooting process easier. Download the complete instructions for easy printing. Go to Step 2 Go to Step 3. Go to Step 4. Go to Step 5. Re-check your router lights. Reconnect the other computers one-by-one to isolate the problem. If the LAN light is not lit solid green: Note: You might want to print these directions to make the troubleshooting process easier. Go to Step 2.
